John Denver, the beloved American singer-songwriter, and environmental activist, tragically died in a plane crash. How did john denver die? On October 12, 1997, John Denver was piloting a recently purchased amateur-built aircraft, an experimental Rutan Long-EZ, off the coast of Monterey Bay, California. The plane experienced mechanical problems shortly after takeoff, and Denver was unable to regain control. The aircraft crashed into the ocean, and Denver, who was the only occupant, did not survive the accident.
