INFORMACJE O ALBUMACH:

Artur Rychlicki:

Jest przecież napisane: „Bóg wziął zatem człowieka i umieścił go w ogrodzie Eden, aby uprawiał go i doglądał.

O FUNDACJI

Fundacja unContemporary to nowa organizacja z siedzibą w Katowicach. Jej celem jest wspieranie sztuki i edukacji wizualnej. W ramach swoich stałych działań prowadzi warsztaty-fotograficzne.org, wydaje papierowy periodyk gazeta-fotograficzna.org i organizuje cykl spotkań Dyskusje o Fotografii.

Wydanie tych dwóch albumów to początek naszej ścieżki wydawniczej.

Jeśli zbiórka osiągnie poziom finansowy wyższy niż zakładana kwota, to przede wszystkim pokryjemy koszty osobowe (m.in. projekty edytorskie i graficzne oprawy) i będziemy mogli zwiększyć ilość egzemplarzy przeznaczonych do recenzji w Polsce i za granicą.

AIMS AND GOALS

The aim of the project is to obtain funds for the publication of a photo album by Artur Rychlicki presenting a series of photographs entitled "Gardens of Bliss" and a photobook by Jakub Dziewit entitled "What do the images want?".

Both albums will be published in an editorial manner designed especially for them. Preliminary assumptions:

  • publication date: September 2021,
  • bilingualism of publications and their distribution throughout the world,
  • circulation of 200 copies,
  • high quality printing on good, high durability paper,
  • sewn binding and hard covers,
  • "Gardens of Bliss" - format: 20 × 20 cm, 112 pages,
  • "What do the images want?" - format: 21 × 28 cm, 64 pages.

This is our first crowdfunding venture, so we anticipate it only to cover printing costs. The final print run will depend on whether the fundraising goal is reached. Please note that publication prices will be higher after the fundraising has ended.

INFORMATION ON ALBUMS:

Artur Rychlicki:

"Gardens of Happiness"

It is a story about places which, when they were created, were supposed to be paradises for their inhabitants, but as a result of human activity they became empty, alienated and hostile spaces. Man first subjugated the world and then destroyed it, dehumanising it at the same time. Artur Rychlicki took the photos for the project mainly in the countries of the former USSR, but also in Morocco and Spain.

The work of Artur Rychlicki has always been, in its spirit, strongly imbued with the thought of Tadeusz Kantor. It can be seen, for example, in the treatment of human life as an eternal journey and the artist himself as a wanderer. Kantor's constant references to the "Odyssey" may indicate that he hoped to return, or at least to be able to return home.

Note, however, that Man's first home was the garden. After all, it is written: "God therefore took man and placed him in the garden of Eden to cultivate and tend it. And in doing so, He gave man this commandment: "'You may eat of every tree of the garden according to your taste; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you must not eat, for when you eat of it you shall inevitably die'."

Rychlicki looks precisely at the "gardens of bliss": places full of life, lands flowing with milk and honey, oases, paradises on earth - only that in the past, because now they are devoid of meanings, hopes and promises, often dead. He looks at places where someone has picked the fruit from the tree of knowledge, but the fruit was sour, so the garden was no longer tended, abandoned, allowed to grow wild (or rather: sterile).

Every now and then, someone takes a look at it and maybe even delights in the ruins found there, the traces of man, but after a short while they leave the garden and go on a journey - to another one.

Jakub Dziewit

"What do the images want?"

It is a metaphotographic statement on the nature of photographic images and the way meaning is formed in them from a single pixel or grain. On the level of reception of the technique of taking a photo, we see only points, which we can in any way "connect into lines", to read meaning from them. They look like the extremely enlarged details in Michelangelo Antonioni's 'Blow Up', which the protagonist's friend describes: "It looks like one of Bill's paintings" - her husband who creates by splashing paint on a painting and waiting for weeks to see what "emerges" from it in his perception. Similarly, if only we look closely enough, we can see the content in the individual dots, the raster of the photographs.

Each subsequent frame of the photograph reveals to us another fragment of the mystery, and our perception, the story we "read", changes and/or develops. Successive moves away from the picture show us faces, portraits, figures, situations, and finally - the context of the picture hanging in the gallery. The eyes of a child, the faces of adults, cameras in hands, a crowd looking at me, a crowd photographing a hanging man, a crowd photographing me, a boy taking a picture of me with his phone. Do we perceive the photograph the same way again and again?

"It is not enough to dismantle the myth into its constituent parts, one must go further and subject the sign itself to dismantling, to 'split it' [...], to liberate the signifiant, to bring to the fore the 'text', the 'antidote of myth'. But this is another story". [Krzysztof Kłosiński, "Sarcasm" - introduction to polish edition of Roland Barthes's "Mythology"].

The publication consists of three cycles: "Camera", "Hands" and "Joy", with the starting point being the photographs taken in Berlin's "Topography of Terror".

ABOUT THE FOUNDATION

The unContemporary Foundation is a new organisation based in Katowice, Poland. Its aim is to support art and visual education. As part of its regular activities, it runs photo workshops, publishes the hard-copy "gazeta-fotograficzna.org" magazine and organises a series of meetings called Discussions on Photography. At the moment, it is also starting a publishing activity of photo albums and photo books.

OUR EXPERIENCE

As a foundation, we are a fairly new entity, but we have been active in the field of culture for over 20 years, when the photo workshop warsztaty-fotograficzne.org were established (initially at the Youth Palace in Katowice). So, we've been involved in photography for a long time - basically in every field, both practical and theoretical. We show our photos at exhibitions, we organise exhibitions ourselves, we write about photography in essays and academically.

We have over 10 years of experience in publishing. In the years 2010-2020, we ran the publishing house grupakulturalna.pl, which, apart from academic books, also published art albums and exhibition catalogues (e.g. an album of paintings by Prof. Stanisław Baj from the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw). Our publications received a distinction in the Most Beautiful Book of the Year competitions organised as part of the Warsaw Book Fair.

LONG-TERM GOALS

The publication of these two albums is the beginning of our publishing path. Starting from the autumn, we will announce a cyclical open call for the publication of subsequent albums. We start with works that are close to our hearts, in order to show you our philosophy of approaching photography as fully as possible, and thus also encourage other authors to cooperate with us.

If the project reaches a financial level higher than the assumed amount, we will mainly cover our personnel costs (including editorial and graphic design of the binding) and we will be able to increase the number of promotional copies in Poland and abroad. If the amount is significantly exceeded, the remaining funds will be allocated to the statutory activities of the Foundation, i.e. publishing a free hard-copy version of the gazeta-fotograficzna.org periodical and publishing more albums (in autumn we are planning a series of small zines for young artists).

DANGERS

Both publications are basically finished and we are past the stage of first proofs. So we do not foresee any problems with the realisation of the project. If we don't collect the whole amount of money it is possible that the edition run will be reduced or the time of realisation will be prolonged.
