Greening Burundi is an environmental, non-profit organization created in August 2017 but officially registered on September 30, 2019 under ministerial order No 530/1898 of the government of Burundi.

We’re an organization of young volunteers that implements climate actions and environmental education programs in schools and the community. We create sustainable development and raise awareness of responsible entrepreneurship and improvement of agricultural production in Burundi. Our focus encompasses all areas - economic, food security, health and environment - to find sustainable solutions to the problems that the population suffer. 

We ask for support of material and financial resources upfront, for the purchase of a #TreeTransporter such as a Mini-Truck or Van because we lack an adequate Transporter to transport trees.

This makes it difficult to plant the large number of trees we wish to plant.

Our Timeline for 2020

In May, we prepared nurseries to expand a 3rd Phase of Greening Burundi to the bordering provinces (Bubanza and Cibitoke). 

Bubanza, Musigati, Gihanga, Buganda, Rugombo, Murwi, the municipalities where we aim to plant trees for reforestation, are separated by distances of about 66-110 km.

We need a Transporter to facilitate the movement of the necessary tools and materials. This year, we plan to distribute 1,000,000 fruit, agro-forestry and indigenous trees for free; 500,000 trees will be planted in each province:  

The period to set up tree nurseries: May to September

The Period for Planting: October to March

The monitoring, watering, weeding of trees start after plantation. 

More Reasons Why We Ask Support for a Transporter

A Transporter will facilitate us to make BIOCHAR, a natural fertilizer we make from waste. This is a great idea we launched, and teach to the community, to manage waste and avoid pollution. This BIOCHAR needs to be transported to the tree nurseries, but we carry it on our heads due to the lack of a Transporter.

We transport trees using a Bicycle due to the Lack of an adequate Transporter.

I'm now using biodegradable bags to grow seedlings in the Greening Burundi tree nurseries. My fight against single-use plastic gave me the idea to change the bags we use. As we are a Team, some of us are committed to make the biodegradable bags from banana peels.  

 Here’s how I transport these biodegradable bags because it is more than 20km from Musigati Commune, where they are made, to the nurseries at Bubanza Commune. We need an adequate Transporter to facilitate this and avoid road risks.

 A Transporter will also help us during the plastic clean-ups that we organize often to collect plastic pollution and other Greening Burundi activities.

We’ve already launched a Green Thursday environmental education workshop program. During the 3rd Phase, 2020 of Greening Burundi, we will continue to educate communities to take adequate measures to preserve the environment.

The Story of Greening Burundi 

In the 1st Phase of the Greening Burundi project, 40,000 trees were planted and by the 2nd phase, a total of 256,738 trees. This year we have commenced the 3rd phase with the setting up of the nursery for 1,000,000 trees to be planted. Our main goal is to plant 50,000,000 trees by 2040. These will help to resolve the climate challenges Burundians are suffering from and contribute to reducing global carbon emissions. 

I founded Greening Burundi because Climate change is underway and we are suffering the consequences. In addition, the clearing of new lands causes the rapid decline of the forest, which covers only 5.4% of the country's area against 50% in 1990. There is therefore a serious problem of environmental protection. Agriculture is the main economic activity in Burundi. It occupies more than 90% of the active population and provides 50% of the GDP. A majority of Burundians live on small-scale food crops (maize, sorghum, beans, tubers) that are grown on small farms with very low yields due to intense soil erosion, deforestation and climate change. Disease directly linked to malnutrition is increasing. Faced with these scourges, I felt challenged to contribute to reforestation to protect the people, the environment and combat global Climate change.

Schoolchildren are involved in tree planting activities.

We work to create local solutions. We have even prepared the Bamboos nursery which will be used to stabilize the edges of the rivers which threaten the farms which are around. Reforestation will stop floods, landslides and leaching of soils that occur during showers. Finally, it will preserve water resources.

I run a Green Thursday environmental education program for adults and students. Community empowerment is encouraged through environmental education and by sharing Information on climate issues to various local actors (teachers, students, parents, communities, neighbourhood chief, catechists, Authorities…).

Planting fruit trees creates new agricultural activities. Market gardening will be developed and training will be given in nursery gardening to strengthen the farmers' capacities in this area, to sustain the benefits of the project and to increase the income of members of grassroots organizations.

We are Youth, United, Motivated and Convinced to fight against Climate Change and its impacts in order to save our Planet.

Gminy Bubanza, Musigati, Gihanga, Buganda, Rugombo, Murwi, w których zamierzamy sadzić drzewa do ponownego zalesienia, są oddalone od siebie o około 66-110 km.

Potrzebujemy transportera, aby ułatwić przemieszczanie niezbędnych narzędzi i materiałów. W tym roku planujemy bezpłatnie rozdać 1 000 000 owoców, drzewek rolno-leśnych i rodzimych; W każdej prowincji zostanie posadzonych 500 000 drzew:

Okres zakładania szkółek: od maja do września

Okres sadzenia: od października do marca

Monitoring, podlewanie, pielenie drzew rozpoczynamy po posadzeniu.

Transporter ułatwi nam produkcję BIOCHARU, naturalnego nawozu, który wytwarzamy z odpadów. To wspaniały pomysł, który uruchomiliśmy i uczymy społeczność, jak zarządzać odpadami i unikać zanieczyszczeń. BIOCHAR trzeba przewieźć do szkółki drzew, ale nosimy go na głowie z powodu braku Transportera.

Obecnie używam toreb biodegradowalnych do uprawy sadzonek w szkółkach Greening Burundi. Moja walka z plastikiem jednorazowego użytku dała mi pomysł, aby zmienić używane torby. Ponieważ jesteśmy Zespołem, niektórzy z nas są zaangażowani w tworzenie biodegradowalnych toreb ze skórek bananów.

Oto jak transportuję te biodegradowalne torby, ponieważ jest to ponad 20 km od gminy Musigati, gdzie są produkowane, do szkółek w gminie Bubanza. Potrzebujemy odpowiedniego przewoźnika, aby to ułatwić i uniknąć zagrożeń drogowych.

 Transporter pomoże nam również podczas sprzątania plastiku, które często organizujemy w celu zbierania zanieczyszczeń plastikiem i innych działań związanych z zazielenianiem Burundi.

Uruchomiliśmy już program warsztatów edukacji ekologicznej w Zielonym Czwartku. Podczas trzeciej fazy zazieleniania Burundi 2020 będziemy kontynuować edukację społeczności w zakresie podejmowania odpowiednich działań w celu ochrony środowiska.
