Description
In her graduation video Olga Malinowska, an Audiovisual Design student is introducing us to the Slavic Mythology through a modern interpretation. "Death is just a dream" - a folklore, experimental, poetry video - is guiding us through the life and death of Marzanna, traditionally depicted in mythology as a female scarecrow. For ancient Slavs, the death and rebirth of a person were interchangeable with the death and rebirth of nature. Similarly, in the case of Marzanna, associating her with decay and the underworld did not negate her inseparable connection with rebirth, life, and joy.
--MOTIVATION--
The phenomenon of death has always fascinated us, specifically the state between life and death, that mythical liminal space. However, our interest in this somewhat generic question of what happens next became painfully real this summer after one of our grandpa's passing. We couldn't help but wonder what would happen to him next if anything at all. We struggled to collect our thoughts and process everything, even though the death itself was expected and peaceful. This recent event sparked a need to know more, to understand better. We wanted to comprehend the source of my mixed feelings and why we felt somewhat apprehensive about the proposed narrative surrounding dealing with death.
We began to contemplate the extent to which we control our post-life destination and how much influence we have over our beliefs and convections. Is the belief in an afterlife merely wishful thinking, a manipulation of reality, or can it genuinely ease the process of coping with death? Why have we become emotionally distant from death, despite its constant presence in our lives through media and other sources? How can we normalize and celebrate this essential element of life without falling into the traps of romanticizing it? Perhaps the romanticization of death doesn't necessarily have negative consequences in the long run.
--LOGLINE--
In the enigmatic realm of Slavic Mythology, the eternal interweaving of life and death mirrors the cycles of nature. Marzanna, embodying the connection between demise, the afterlife, rebirth, life, and joy, takes center stage in a dreamlike narrative that unfolds through three acts. Each act delves deeper into an original interpretation of what the afterlife could be, exploring mystical dimensions. Here, the boundaries of faith and imagination fade away, inviting us to embark on a journey that surpasses the familiar, stretching the horizons of our understanding and beliefs.
