World Refugee Day is an international day allocated by the United Nations to honour refugees around the globe. Every year on June 20 we celebrate the strength and courage of people who have been forced to flee their home country to escape conflict or persecution. World Refugee Day is an occasion to build empathy and to recognise the resilience of refugees in rebuilding their lives.

World Refugee Day shines a light on the rights, needs and dreams of refugees, helping to mobilise political will and resources so refugees can not only survive but also thrive. Each year, World Refugee Day is marked by a variety of events in many countries around the globe in support of refugees. It is also important to reiterate that any one could become a refugee and that at this moment, those who aren’t are just circumstantially lucky.

Every year Rethinking Refugees wants to celebrate that special day. In 2021 we organise World Refugee Month to create a safe space and the possibility to learn more in solidarity with refugees.

The official theme by UNHCR for 2021 World Refugee Day is: Together we heal, learn and shine. Keeping that in mind we continue our Rethinking Borders theme with webinars, workshops, collective meetings and open dialogues to foster empathy, perspective-taking and most importantly have a good time.
