Sajna ma 18 lat i właśnie dostała się do National College w Kerali, Indie. Czesne za pierwszy rok to około 5.000 zł, do tego trzeba dodać opłatę za książki i mundurek, i codzienne dojazdy, które wynoszą około 1.000 zł. Rodzice Sajny oboje są niepiśmienni. Ale oboje uznali, że edukacja jest kluczem do zapewnienia lepszego życia swojej córce. Mnie to bardzo wzrusza. Kovalam, gdzie mieszkają, to jedno z tych miejsc na ziemi, gdzie kobiety nie jedzą przy stole z mężczyznami, wciąż wymagany jest posag (chociaż jest to nielegalne), a dziewcząt generalnie się nie kształci, bo i po co.

Ojciec Sajeer, sympatyczny i bardzo inteligentny człowiek, musiał pracować od 7 roku życia, by zarobić na utrzymanie rodziny. Mama Yasemin również nie otrzymała żadnej formalnej edukacji. Przez ostatnią dekadę Sajeer zarabiał na życie całej rodziny, w tym swojej sparaliżowanej matki, sprzedając sarongi i chusty na plaży w Kovalam, oczywiście tylko w sezonie turystycznym. Pieniędzy tych ledwo wystarczało na zakwaterowanie i bardzo skromne jedzenie. Okres pandemii uniemożliwił Sajeerowi zarobkowanie. Następnie zdiagnozowano u Sajeera gruźlicę, z której na szczęście wyszedł, ale wciąż jest bardzo osłabiony. Od 2012 roku regularnie wspieramy tę rodzinę. Tym razem potrzebna kwota nie jest mała. Bylibyśmy ogromnie wdzięczni za nawet najdrobniejsze wpłaty, by wspomóc edukację Sajny. Sajna bardzo chce zostać nauczycielką.

Sajna is 18 and she has just been admitted to the National Collage in Kerala, India. The fees for the first year amount to about 1100 euros, and she also needs to buy her books and uniform. Sajna’s parents are both illiterate. Yet they both decided that education is the only means for their daughter to have a better life. I am really moved by their decision, after all this is happening in one of those places on Earth where women do not eat at the same table with men, where dowery is still expected, even if illegal, and where girls from poor families are more likely to get a husband than an education.

Sajna’s father, Sajeer is nice and very intelligent. He had to work for the upkeep of this family starting from the age of 7. Sajna’s mother, Yasemin, has not received any formal education either. For the past decade or more Sajeer was selling sarongs and scarfs at the local beech, needless to say, only during the tourist season. The money was sufficient only for the housing and some very basic food. During the pandemics he was mainly out of work. And just as the pandemic is almost over, Sajeer has been diagnosed with TB. He is better now, but still very weak. We have been regularly  supporting this family from 2012. But this time a rather large sum of money is needed. We’ll be super grateful for even the tiniest contribution that would support Sajna’s chance at education and a better life. Sajna want to become a teacher very very much.
